The new Brew System is here!
Our new brewer, Kirk McHale, arrived in town a couple months back – he is the mastermind behind Melvin IPA and 2 x 4 Quadruple Pale Ale. He drove our new tap mobile up from the Border Patrol in San Diego. Words cannot describe the bus so you just have to see it to believe it. Some highlights of his trip were breaking down every morning and having the entire 16-ton bus shake when it hits the maximum speed of 63. …

“The pioneers of a warless world are the young men and women who refuse military service.” – Albert Einstein
A few weeks ago I sat atop a gigantic jumbled pile of granitic boulders amongst an ocean of ever reaching Joshua Trees. I listened to wind rushing over rock and the occasional “cluk-cluk”of a curious raven. All was serene, basking in the warm desert sun, until a series of sonic booms ripped across the surreal landscape.
The thudding drone of military helicopters soon followed like a swarm of annoying industrial gnats. …

The following letter to the editor was originally printed in the Planet JH Weekly, July 27, 2005:
Vive la difference!
My personal vehicle sports a “Boycott France” bumper sticker which has elicited strong opinions with varying degrees of civility from all sides of the political spec- trum. However, this evening [July 18] when an enthusiastic Francophile and apparent supporter of the pre-war regime in Iraq placed an anonymous message on the windshield of my parked and empty vehicle, every person has expressed their opinion proudly, face to face or by name.

Ben Roth is a Jackson Hole based artist and sculpture who is on FIRE! It’s been exciting to watch his career accelerate over the last few years, but he’s earned it through hard work, calculated risks and hyper-motivation. He’s recently relocated his studio over to the emerging art district being established by the nice folks at the Teton Art Lab and Igneous Skis.
Ben’s work explores a wide spectrum, both fun and functional, from fine art to furniture, with inspirations from from Nature to NASCAR. Next time you’re soaking in the …

I published some of my prop wishes for Wyoming and Jackson in the New Year in our Newsmaker issue this week http://planetjh.com/news/A_106896.aspx. Among other things, I’d like to see lodging tax revenue used to promote a Jackson Hole that’s representative of why we love to call this place home, a resolution to the ongoing and polarizing wolf dispute between Wyoming and the Feds, and a body count of zero on Teton Pass this ski season. Here’s one I’d add: that we see a final comp plan before the end of …

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience” -Teilhard de Chardin
The link between creativity and insanity, specifically Bipolar Disorder, has been well documented, but never fully understood. There’s a long list of exceptional people who have struggled with this unexpectedly altered reality, from Ernest Hemingway to Abraham Lincoln and Kirk Cobain. This mental disorder, often like an accidental waking dream, for perhaps not so mysterious reasons has been exponentially increasing in our society since WW II. Scientists currently believe the affliction …

This past Memorial Day evening found me regrouping from a hectic road trip at a motel in Burlington, VT. Scanning the TV channels I came across a ceremony on CSPAN at the Vietnam War memorial in DC. A military chaplain gave a solemn speech meant to sound significant. This was followed by a drab discussion about the importance of refurbishing the foreboding monument. It was all very official.
What these military officers failed to mention, however, is the declassified documents confirming that the “gulf of tonkin” incident, which was the primary …

The budget was signed this morning by the Governor. Some highpoints of the budget that Rep. Gingery worked on and made sure that they passed
$2.5 million into the Wildlife Trust Fund
$2 million into the Cultural Trust Fund
$685,000 for telepsychiatry — Rep. Gingery serves as the Co Chair of the Select Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse and worked to get this provision in the budget. Many communities do not have psychiatrists and by allowing patients to access psychiatrists through teleconference will expand patient care and reduce costs considerably.
$5.5 million …

Representative Colin Simpson, the Speaker of the Wyoming House of Representatives has been working for years for improvements to our health care system. Below is a letter that he sent out earlier today describing some of the bills that he is working on.
As this budget session continues, there are two bills I’d like to highlight that may be acted upon this week by the Wyoming House of Representatives. During these tough economic times we need to reduce costs for hard-working Wyomingites – so they can afford health coverage – and …

[reprinted from an 11/7 edition of the JH Weekly, letters to the editor]
“Where’s the 757 in these 9/11 photos? Anyone, anyone, anyone…”
When the empirical Dark Lords of the Bush and Bin Laden regimes began choreographing 9/11 they failed to foresee a fateful flaw in their sinister plans to wage their soul-less, profit driven war. This would be the emergence of the Internet and a cultural phenomenon called Youtube.com.
The reptilian Republicans assumed that their “shock and awe” strategies would sweep panic and fear over the American people, while the blaringly obvious …
