Letter to the Editor concerning health care
The Wyoming Legislature is planning to pass a bill making it a crime to offer health care or medicine under the Affordable Care Act. This bill will remove the right of access to health insurance for those with pre-existing conditions, and threatens them with possible financial ruin and lack of care.
This use of terror tactics threatens the character of our Wyoming.
In 1976 we arrived at Jenny Lake to work for the Grand Teton Lodge Company. We were captivated by the park and decided to spend the winter in the Town of Jackson. We knew no one and had little money, but we were welcomed by the people of Jackson. After living in Sun Valley, Idaho the previous winter, which we found to be somewhat snobbish and seemed to have a stuck up Euro attitude, we were greatly impressed with the Wyoming character and the acceptance we received from the people we met. It didn’t seem to matter who we were or what we had, the Equality State’s tradition of openness and acceptance was impressive. Over the years we came to know many “Important People,” and most seemed to be willing to interact on a human level of equality.
Now the terror tactics of the Wyoming Legislature threaten that tradition.
To legislate legal action against health care professionals who give care or medicine based on the Affordable Care Act impacts all citizens and especially those who were excluded from access to health insurance under the old system. To exclude those citizens who work hard, pay taxes, and support the community — simply because they have pre-existing conditions, and just to make a political point — is very saddening and hurtful. If this is done, Wyoming destroys its heritage as the Equality State; for those with health care access will be safe from this terror, but others will not. A second class identity will be created for the others. The others will be discriminated against. The others will be blocked from the help the Affordable Care Act has promised all citizens.
I believe that any Legislator who votes to punish Wyoming citizens who give access to Health Care and Medicine under this Act is failing his/her oath to serve the people of this state in favor of special interests.
Each Legislator who votes for this bill, votes for outside interests who do not value our Wyoming citizen’s rights.
These Legislators claim to be following the Constitution, but are denying the founding American principle, “. . .that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Not to mention the Wyoming tradition of acceptance and non-discrimination.
This use of terror tactics is as potent as a bomb, and our society will suffer if implemented. Good Citizens will be harmed and possibly forced to move to other states to receive health care. Our population will decrease, further weakening our society.
Wyoming Citizens, ask your Legislators to please consider another avenue to make political statements, and give us all a chance to live in peace and good health.
