LIVE and COLLECTIVE SOUL
With Special Guest Rocco Deluca and The Burden

LIVE - Live's signature mix of anthemic rockers, dynamic arrangements and spiritually aware lyrics continues to grow. Songs From Black Mountain was recorded with producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Hoobastank) at a studio in Santa Barbara in May 2005 for what became a whirlwind session. The multi-platinum band recorded all 12 of the album's songs in a frenetic burst of creativity that surprised everyone. "We haven't recorded that quickly since Throwing Copper," Kowalczyk says. "When we got in the studio, we all slipped into the zone. We were working hard, but we were completely at ease, open to each other and in the flow. Everyone was awestruck by not only how fast we were recording, but also by how good it sounded."

COLLECTIVE SOUL - After four years out of the public eye, Collective Soul singer Ed Roland has a message for the world. “Let the word out/I gotta get it out. Whoa, I’m feeling better now,” he declares in “Better Now,” the energetic rocker that launches Youth, the Georgia rockers’ first studio album since 2000’s Blender.
After a seven-year run that that was highlighted by such rock radio smashes as the catchy as hell “Gel,” one of seven songs during that interval to go to #1 on the Billboard Rock Tracks charts, the omnipresent upbeat number “Shine,” the soaring ballad “The World I Know,” “Blame,” “December,” “Precious Declaration,” another rock radio chart-topper, and the list goes on and on, Collective Soul has learned a few things about writing memorable hooks. All of that experience went into the striking 11 songs on Youth, an album Ed describes as “a mixture of Dosage and the first CD, really poppy tunes and fun production.”

doing little to stop the genocide in Darfur, if not actually
perpetuating it. President Bush announced economic sanctions on an
additional 30 companies – bringing the total to 130.

He also
imposed sanctions on three specific Sudanese individuals, two senior
government officials and a rebel leader. Bush also asked Secretary of
State Condoleeza Rice to draft and present a resolution to the United
Nations that would impose a broad, international arms embargo.

Good
job, Mr. President. It’s about damn time. For the past three years,
Sudanese people living in the Darfur region have faced brutal attacks –
over 200,000 killed thus far and countless women and girls raped –
while many international governments have stood idly by, unwilling to
classify the atrocities as genocide and unwilling to do anything about
it.

Though I don’t know enough about the effect the U.S.
sanctions will have, I can at least feel hopeful that our country’s
stand in Darfur will inspire other nations and the U.N. to act
similarly.

— Melanie Stein

Mountain Men Go back to the mountains

Last year, after laying into the Mountain Man Rendezvous, one of the feature events of Jackson Hole’s Old West Days, I wondered if maybe I hadn’t been a little harsh. This year, after going again with my boy, I’m wondering if I didn’t go too easy on it.

Once again I was disappointed with the “pre-1840s” reenactment. Only one man in buckskins even said hello to us – everyone else either sat dourly in his tent or yucked it up with their fellow rendezvousers – and one woman’s only words to us were “Don’t touch those beads.”

I’m the kind of guy who lives to learn something new, a trait I hope to pass along to my 21-month-old, but not a single Mountain Man or woman offered even a shred of information about the curiosities that lay around their tent. I guess one needs to pull out one’s wallet to receive that kind of treatment.

— Richard Anderson

Anyone see the Wreckers at JHMR on Saturday?

What's the verdict? But in such a different way than most documentaries you see. Often
times, whether we admit it or not, we watch a documentary on a group of
people or individual that has undergone devastation and we cry and
feel for them; but as soon as we turn the
t.v. off or step outside the theatre, we suddenly
forget, dialing our friends on our cell phones
and indulging ourselves with a gourmet meal.

This
documentary hit home. It tells the story of several Lost Boys relocated
to our home turf, the United States. Following three Lost Boys, now men, who were
some of the select few chosen to leave their refugee camp in Kenya and
come to the U.S. to work and get an education, the documentary walks us
through the hardships of being thrown into a different country,
culture, and world. It made the viewer put him/herself in the Lost Boys
shoes-as impossible as it is for any of us to empathize with such
hardship-and think about how fortunate we are and rethink how many view immigrants. What
have these people been through? It begs us to welcome those that come
here for a better life.

Hearing the true accounts of two
Lost Boys relocated to Salt Lake City after the screening, brought the
film into closer perspective. Their story has followed me home, through
dinner, and throughout the night. Did any of you go see the
documentary. I know you did, it was sold out to a full house of
300!

New Years at playhouse

I'm going to see this band
