Building A Strong Wyoming

Visting the Wyoming Penitentiary
This past week I went on an inspection tour of the Wyoming State Penitentiary.  I had been to the South Facility before, but this was my first visit to the new North Facility.  The North Facility houses all of the maximum security prisoners.  The facility is well maintained and still looks new.  The prisoners are kept in pods.  A pod has rooms on two floors that surround a common seating area.  The pods are not that large, so that there are not a lot of prisoners congregated in the same place.  There are classrooms, law library, gym, cafeteria.  If it wasn't for the metal doors, you would think you were in a nice Junior High School.  Next to the North Facility is a building that houses the industries, which include a clothing manufacturing shop and the food service area.  There is one whole section of the prison that is not open because they can not staff it.  The reason there is such a staff problem is that the housing costs have gone up because of the mineral boom. The guards can not afford to buy the cheapest home of $200,000 on only $32,000 per year salary.  The view from the softball field is of just endless sagebrush.
