Jackson Hole Art Blog

Find out what the Jackson Hole Art Community is all about! It's a fun way to learn about the valley, art, artists, and what's going on.
The Opening
Gallery opening, artist reception, art talk, whatever you want to call it we've got it in Jackson. So what is the deal? If one attends such an event, is he or she in turn required to buy art after sucking down $10 worth of booze? Not at all. The opening is a gallery tradition that still dances to the tune of the high falutin', but that does not mean we should be scared of it, nor should we blow it off. You (the general public) are invited to enjoy a beverage of your choice and if you're lucky a snack, while checking out art. There are no strings attached and that can not be emphasized enough. You don't have to talk about it and you are free to detest every last piece hanging on the wall, sitting on a pedestal, or dangling from the ceiling. On the other hand, if you want to share your feelings about what you're looking at, by all means do so; it's encouraged! Is there a stigma that I'm missing. Don't fear the art world. Get out and enjoy it!

what can I say to this.....no strings attached....other than hanging out with the JH art community........art is not stuck in some gallery,  it is in your head as you walk down the street..soaking in the sights of how the old drug store used to look, and remembering the old days when you could buy a colorful polo shirt, definately a work of art....and the visual live art of the Dirty Jack's theater...how art has come such a long way since then...not to be a critic of the wonderful artistic eye candy of Ripley's... good old art.....I remember the good days of art when you could walk into a tavern for an afternoon sip and end up having a great time with Vivi and Gary.  If you want to stay in business in Jackson, art is your ticket....with the town council approving high end condo style hotels knocking down the cheaper low end hotels, get ready to serve the Art collectors, for they may be the only ones left who can afford to stay in the town..........watch out Teton Village you got nothing on the new and improved town of Jackson, complete with no entertainment other than a bunch of rugs and art.....the wild west image is fading fast.....

You're right. Art can be found in places other than just the gallery. I could even find art in your use of ellepsis (dot, dot, dot). It's an interesting point you make that raises many good questions. Art is your environment. It's a part of Jackson and it should be embraced. That does not mean it should be frozen in time. The wild west image is changing and there sure as heck ain't much anyone can do about it. It's an image connected to a dynamic and unique community. Can one really expect it to stay the same? Rather than poo-pooing the shift, why not engage and embrace the chance to be a part of it? You can still walk into a tavern and have a sip, except this time around it might be with Ben and Ryan. Talk of the good ol' days is fun and all, but it can only take you so far. The point is not 'visit the art galleries, join the club, support the inevitable destruction of Jackson', but rather 'take the chance to use art as a vehicle to engage the community, develop a dialogue between Jacksonites and get involved'. This is by no means the only way, but it sure is a fun one.

wow that is a pretty defeatist attitude. engage and embrase the shift, not hey what the f  is going on here.   I am thinking that the Germans embrased the shifts in the 30's, just as us Americans are embracing our  president today by allowing him to do what he has done to our country.........

Rocking Chair-

I apologize for any indication of complacency in my last comment. It was unintended. You ruffled my feathers and maybe I should have taken a deep breath before responding, although I get the sense that no matter what i write you will oppose it.

Do I need to quote Dylan (the times they are a-what)? Engage and embrace do not mean roll over and play dead nor do they mean jump on the band wagon. Do exactly what you are doing: stand for what you believe in and do so in the community -getting back to the original point of this posting. Just be warned that clinging to the past can get you in trouble. (NOTE: THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLINGING TO THE PAST AND DEFENDING YOUR VALUES- I AM IN NO WAY DISCOURAGING THE LATTER)

The drift in this blog topic is astounding, but why stop it? Must be my defeatist attitude.
