Jackson Hole High School basketball team played school rival the Star Valley Braves last Thursday. The boy’s varsity did win this game, but the commotion in the gym during this game was appalling. The hatred between these two schools is so fierce. This rivalry has been in place for years, so many parents of current students took place in time honored tradition and help to fuel the hatred that is possessed towards the Star Valley community. Is this a safe lesson to be teaching our youth? We are sending the message that hatred of an entire group of people is ok when it has been around for generations. This is against any life lessons I was taught in school throughout my 11 years of public education yet the school administration is supporting it. I feel we should be preaching acceptance not making cracks about bestiality. The school of course doesn't advocate the bestiality talk, but the mass production of "BEAT STAR VALLEY" shirts every year does anything but bridge the gap. Hatred in the world today is responsible for so many problems. The adults of this community should be teaching acceptance of alternative cultures. Are these rivalries a good thing? Could they have lasting impacts or are they just part of high school? Should we be, not only advocating, but preaching this activity to students?
