School Rivalries

Jackson Hole High School basketball team played school rival the Star Valley Braves last Thursday. The boy’s varsity did win this game, but the commotion in the gym during this game was appalling. The hatred between these two schools is so fierce. This rivalry has been in place for years,  so many parents of current students took place in time honored tradition and help to fuel the hatred that is possessed towards the Star Valley community. Is this a safe lesson to be teaching our youth? We are sending the message that hatred of an entire group of people is ok when it has been around for generations. This is against any life lessons I was taught in school throughout my 11 years of public education yet the school administration is supporting it. I feel we should be preaching acceptance not making cracks about bestiality. The school of course doesn't advocate the bestiality talk, but the mass production of "BEAT STAR VALLEY" shirts every year does anything but bridge the gap. Hatred in the world today is responsible for so many problems. The adults of this community should be teaching acceptance of alternative cultures. Are these rivalries a good thing? Could they have lasting impacts or are they just part of high school? Should we be, not only advocating, but preaching this activity to students?

Don't confuse a rivalry with true "hatred".  I was at that game and while I would definitely not defend all of the behavior exhibited there, I don't think that school rivalries are a major impediment to whirled peas.

Now when Jackson played at Mountain View, THAT was hatred!!

(just kidding)

jschreiber, i definitely sympathize with your concern of violence in schools. I do think that it is just part of high school though. I don't know that high school rivalries, major league sports rivalries, college sports rivalries have anything to do with cultural acceptance. The practice is as old as the wheel and I think that it fuels healthy competition. Yes, the line is often crossed by a few overly hormonal teenage jackasses, but that is all it is, just a healthy rivalry and some jackasses that take it too far. I'm glad that someone your age, in the midst of his/her high school years can see the possible threat this may cause to our community and the way we raise and educate our youth.
